The NuMex April Fools is one of the most unusual and eye-catching chilli varieties developed by New Mexico State University (USA). This playful Capsicum annuum produces an abundance of twisted, wrinkled pods that continually change colour as they ripen, making the plant appear different almost every day.
The ornamental fruits mature through an incredible sequence of purple, cream, orange, and finally bright red, with many pods displaying attractive dark striping and mottled colouring along the way. Growing up to 9 cm (3.5 inches) long, the peppers are crisp, smooth-skinned and packed with visual appeal.
With a gentle heat level of 1,000–6,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU), NuMex April Fools delivers a mild warmth combined with a fresh, slightly sweet chilli flavour. The colourful pods are perfect for salads, salsas, rice dishes, stuffed peppers, stir-fries, or dried into vibrant chilli flakes.
The compact, highly ornamental plants typically grow to around 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) tall, making them ideal for containers, patios, balconies, bonchi projects, windowsills, greenhouses, and indoor growing. Despite their modest size, they are exceptionally productive, producing dozens of peppers per plant throughout the season.
NuMex April Fools is easy to grow and performs particularly well in Northern European climates, reliably fruiting in its first year. It can also be successfully overwintered, becoming a long-lived perennial in frost-free conditions. Mature plants often remain compact and decorative for many years, although heavily laden branches may benefit from light support.
Whether you’re looking for a productive culinary chilli, an unusual ornamental plant, or something truly different for your collection, NuMex April Fools is guaranteed to bring colour, character and conversation to your garden.
