Pippin’s Golden Honey Chilli Seeds – 10 Fresh Seeds
Pippin’s Golden Honey is a beautiful American heirloom pepper with a remarkable history, associated with the celebrated African-American artist and seed collector Horace Pippin.
The variety belongs to the same historic group of peppers as Buena Mulata and the famous Fish Pepper, all linked to seeds that passed through Pippin’s hands in the 1940s. Pippin traded rare seeds with beekeeper H. Ralph Weaver, whose grandson, food historian William Woys Weaver, later helped preserve and reintroduce several of these varieties.
The fruits are extremely attractive, starting a deep purple before changing through a distinctive honey-mustard colour and finally ripening to a warm golden-orange. The peppers are usually around 7–10cm long, with relatively thin walls and a sweet, mild flavour.
Unlike its hotter cousin Buena Mulata, Pippin’s Golden Honey is primarily valued as a sweet pepper, making it excellent for eating fresh, stuffing, frying and pickling. Its unusual colour progression also makes it a superb ornamental edible plant.
The connection with Buena Mulata is particularly interesting. Both varieties form part of the historic Horace Pippin pepper collection, selected not only for flavour but also for their unusual colours and striking appearance. Buena Mulata famously ripens through purple, salmon, orange and red, while Golden Honey follows its own distinctive route from dark purple through mustard to golden-orange.
