Broccoli Collection Growing Guide
Broccoli grows best in fertile, moisture-retentive soil in an open position with plenty of sunlight. The varieties in this collection have slightly different growth habits, so sowing at different times can help provide a longer and more varied harvest.
🌱 Sowing
Sow seeds approximately 1–2 cm deep in seed trays, modules or a prepared outdoor seed bed.
For early crops, sow under cover from approximately January to April. Main-season broccoli and calabrese can generally be sown from April through to July, depending on the variety and intended harvest period.
San Marzano is a quicker-growing Brassica rapa type and can be succession sown during the growing season for repeated harvests.
Maintain a temperature of around 15–20°C during germination where possible and keep the compost evenly moist.
🌿 Growing On & Transplanting
Once seedlings are approximately 5–8 cm tall and have developed several true leaves, they can be transplanted into their final growing position.
Harden off plants raised indoors or under glass for around a week before planting outside.
For larger broccoli and calabrese plants, space approximately 45–60 cm apart with similar spacing between rows.
San Marzano can generally be grown at closer spacing when being harvested young for shoots and leaves.
💧 Watering
Keep the soil consistently moist, particularly during dry spells and while heads and shoots are developing.
Avoid allowing plants to dry out severely, as inconsistent watering can reduce crop quality. Applying a mulch around established plants can help conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
🌱 Feeding
Broccoli is a relatively hungry crop and performs best in fertile soil containing plenty of well-rotted compost or organic matter.
A balanced or nitrogen-rich vegetable feed can be applied during active growth if required. Avoid excessive nitrogen once heads begin forming.
🐛 Pest Protection
Young brassica plants can be vulnerable to pigeons, cabbage white butterfly caterpillars, aphids, slugs and snails.
Fine insect netting can provide excellent protection against cabbage white butterflies and pigeons.
Check plants regularly and remove caterpillars or affected leaves when required. Brassica collars may also help reduce problems caused by cabbage root fly.

Keep beds weed-free and gently firm soil around taller plants if they become loose after wind or heavy rain.
Some taller sprouting broccoli plants may benefit from staking in exposed locations.
Successive sowings can help extend the harvesting period, particularly with faster-growing varieties such as San Marzano.
🥦 Harvesting
Harvest broccoli and calabrese while the heads or shoots are firm and before the individual flower buds begin to open.
Cut the main head with a sharp knife while leaving the plant in the ground, as many varieties will subsequently produce additional side shoots.
Early Purple Sprouting is harvested by repeatedly cutting the developing purple shoots.
San Marzano can be harvested young for tender shoots, leaves and developing flower heads.
Regular harvesting encourages continued production and gives the best flavour and texture.
