The Santa Fe Grande is a highly productive, mild-to-medium heat chilli pepper that has become a favourite among home gardeners thanks to its excellent yields, attractive fruit, and outstanding versatility in the kitchen. Also known as the Yellow Hot or Güero Chilli, this Capsicum annuum variety is particularly well suited to the UK’s shorter growing season, making it an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced growers.
The compact, bushy plants typically reach 50–90 cm in height, making them ideal for pots, containers, greenhouses, or smaller vegetable gardens. They are early to mature and produce impressive clusters of thick-fleshed, cone-shaped peppers measuring approximately 7–8 cm long throughout a long harvesting season.
The attractive fruits ripen through a beautiful colour progression, starting creamy yellow, turning bright orange, and finally reaching a rich deep red when fully mature. Their thick walls and crisp texture make them as appealing on the plate as they are on the plant.
With a heat rating of approximately 500–5,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU), Santa Fe Grande offers a gentle warmth balanced by a naturally sweet flavour. This makes it an incredibly versatile chilli that can be enjoyed by those who prefer flavour over extreme heat.
Santa Fe Grande is delicious eaten fresh in salads, salsas and sandwiches, while its thick flesh also makes it perfect for pickling, stir-fries, roasting and grilling. It’s a true all-round culinary chilli that performs exceptionally well in a wide variety of dishes.
Another advantage of this reliable variety is its natural resistance to Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV), helping to produce healthy, vigorous plants and consistent harvests.
