The Diavolicchio Di Diamante is one of the best-known traditional chilli peppers from Calabria, Southern Italy. A member of the Capsicum annuum species, this classic Italian variety is renowned for its rich flavour, attractive appearance and medium-hot heat level.
Its name originates from the beautiful coastal town of Diamante, home to the famous annual Peperoncino Festival. Before the festival brought worldwide recognition, this variety was simply known as Diavolicchio.
The plants produce slender, elongated chillies measuring approximately 7–8 cm in length. The fruits develop from dark green before ripening to a vibrant glossy red, creating an impressive display both in the garden and in the kitchen.
With a heat rating of approximately 40,000–100,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU), Diavolicchio Di Diamante delivers a satisfying kick without overwhelming the flavour. It is perfect for adding warmth to pasta dishes, pizzas, sauces, oils and traditional Italian recipes.
In Calabria, the ripe fruits are commonly threaded into decorative chilli necklaces and sun-dried, allowing them to be stored for long periods while intensifying their flavour. Once dried, they can be ground into a fragrant chilli powder that adds both aroma and a pleasant level of heat to a wide range of dishes.
