Egg Plant Konasu Seeds – 15 Fresh Seeds

Konasu is an unusual traditional Japanese aubergine prized for its small, glossy purple-black fruits, tender flesh and excellent culinary qualities.

Unlike the large elongated aubergines commonly found in supermarkets, Konasu produces miniature, rounded to oval fruits, often harvested while still small and tender. The dark skin contrasts beautifully with the creamy white flesh inside.

The plants have an upright, productive habit and are particularly well suited to containers, greenhouses and warm sheltered gardens. Konasu can also cope well with pot culture, making it a great option where growing space is limited.

The fruits have a mild, savoury aubergine flavour and tender texture when cooked. Their small size makes them particularly useful for stir-fries, grilling, roasting, steaming and Japanese-style dishes, where the fruits can often be cooked whole or halved.

The Japanese name Konasu essentially means “small” or “baby aubergine”, which perfectly describes this distinctive little variety.

🌱 Growing Guide

Sowing: February–April
Sowing Depth: Approx. 5mm
Germination Temperature: 24–30°C
Germination: Usually 7–14 days
Plant Out: May–June, after all frost risk has passed
Spacing: Approx. 40–50cm
Position: Full sun and sheltered
Harvest: July–October

Sow indoors into small pots or modules approximately 5mm deep. Aubergines need consistent warmth to germinate successfully, so a heated propagator is very useful.

Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant individually and gradually pot them on as they develop.

Plant into their final position only once temperatures are reliably warm. In the UK, Konasu will generally perform best in a greenhouse, polytunnel or large container in a warm sheltered position.

Water regularly and feed with a high-potash tomato or vegetable fertiliser once flowering begins.

Harvest the fruits while they are young, glossy and tender. Regular picking encourages continued fruit production.
