Texas Tepin Chilli Seeds – Wild Texas Chiltepin Pepper – 10 Seeds

🤠 Small Pepper. Big History. Serious Heat! 🌶️

Some chillies impress with their enormous size. Others impress with their extraordinary appearance.

Texas Tepin proves that incredible things can come in very small packages!

This fascinating wild-type chilli produces masses of tiny, round fruits that ripen from green through orange to a beautiful bright red.

Despite their diminutive size, these little peppers can deliver a surprisingly powerful burst of heat.

A close relative of the ancestral wild chilli peppers of the Americas, Texas Tepin is a fantastic choice for collectors, enthusiasts and anyone interested in the history of chilli cultivation.

🌶️ The Famous Wild Chilli of Texas

The chiltepin has a special place in Texan culture.

Growing naturally across parts of the southwestern United States and Mexico, it belongs to the wild ancestral lineage of Capsicum annuum.

In 1997, the chiltepin was officially recognised as the state native pepper of Texas.

Sometimes called the bird pepper, its tiny fruits are readily eaten by birds, which help disperse the seeds.

Today, chiltepin peppers remain highly valued for their distinctive heat and culinary uses.

🔴 Tiny, Beautiful Red Berries

Texas Tepin produces miniature, rounded fruits that resemble tiny berries.

They begin green, develop orange colouring and eventually mature to bright red.

Although small, the fruits can appear in remarkable quantities.

Our own Texas Tepin plants at Red Dragon Seeds have produced an abundance of peppers, with numerous fruits developing simultaneously.

The photographs show our own plants and harvests, demonstrating just how productive this fascinating chilli can be.

🔥 A Powerful Burst of Heat

Don’t let their small size fool you!

Chiltepin peppers are known for delivering an intense, sharp burst of heat that develops quickly.

Typical reported heat levels for chiltepin peppers range from approximately 40,000 to 100,000 Scoville Heat Units.

Actual heat levels may vary according to genetics and growing conditions.

Their concentrated heat makes them particularly useful for adding a fiery kick to dishes without needing large quantities of chilli.

🌿 A Beautiful and Productive Plant

Texas Tepin develops an attractive, branching growth habit with small green leaves and numerous miniature fruits.

The contrast between the green foliage and red berries makes the plant especially appealing.

Under favourable conditions, plants can become very productive, carrying large numbers of fruits at various stages of maturity.

They are an interesting choice for greenhouse growing and can also be cultivated in containers.

🍲 Excellent for Sauces, Salsa and Seasoning

Traditionally, chiltepin peppers are valued as a powerful seasoning ingredient.

Their small size makes them particularly convenient for drying and using whole or crushed.

Try Texas Tepin in:

  • 🌮 Mexican-inspired salsa
  • 🍲 Soups and stews
  • 🌶️ Homemade hot sauces
  • 🧂 Dried chilli seasoning
  • 🫙 Pickled chilli preparations
  • 🔥 Spicy marinades

A little can go a long way!

🌱 Growing Texas Tepin in the UK

Sow indoors between January and March for the longest possible growing season. Use a quality seed compost and maintain a consistent temperature of approximately 25–30°C. Wild-type peppers may germinate more slowly or irregularly than some cultivated chilli varieties, so patience is important. Once seedlings are established, transplant them into individual pots. Grow in a greenhouse, polytunnel or another warm, sheltered position with plenty of light. Protect plants from frost and maintain regular watering without waterlogging the compost. Given suitable conditions, Texas Tepin can develop into a productive, attractive chilli plant.
