Spencer Mixed Sweet Pea produces large, frilled, highly attractive blooms in a wide range of colours. The long stems and strong fragrance make it a favourite for cutting and traditional garden displays.

Sweet peas are one of the best annual climbers for fragrance, colour and cutting. They look superb grown up canes, arches, obelisks or netting and reward regular picking with more flowers.

For the strongest plants, grow in a sunny position with rich soil and keep them watered through dry spells. The more flowers you cut, the longer they will usually continue blooming.

🌱 Sowing

  • Sow from October to April, either in autumn or early spring.
  • Sow 1-2cm deep in deep pots, root trainers or modules.
  • Keep cool and bright once germinated.
  • Pinch out growing tips when plants are 10-15cm tall to encourage bushier growth.

🪴 Planting Out

  • Plant out in spring after hardening off.
  • Space plants 15-20cm apart at the base of supports.
  • Provide canes, netting, obelisks or a trellis for climbing.

☀️ Growing Conditions

  • Grow in full sun in rich, fertile, well-drained soil.
  • Water regularly, especially in dry weather.
  • Mulch around plants to help retain moisture.

✂️ Flowering & Picking

  • Pick flowers regularly to encourage more blooms.
  • Remove seed pods as they form to prolong flowering.
  • Flowers are ideal for scented indoor bunches.

💡 Top Tips

  • Sweet peas prefer cooler roots, so avoid very dry, hot containers.
  • Feed occasionally with a high-potash feed once flowering begins.
  • Protect young plants from slugs, snails and mice.
