Red Noodle Yard Long Bean Seeds – 15 Fresh Seeds

Red Noodle Yard Long Bean is a striking climbing bean producing exceptionally long, slender burgundy-red to purple pods. Also known as a yardlong bean or asparagus bean, this warm-season crop is especially popular in Asian cooking and makes an impressive addition to the vegetable garden.

The vigorous climbing plants require support and perform best in a warm, sunny position. Harvest the pods while young and tender for the best flavour and texture. They are excellent stir-fried, steamed or added to curries and other cooked dishes, with the dramatic colour making them particularly attractive at harvest.

Species: Vigna unguiculata subsp. sesquipedalis
Type: Yard Long / Asparagus Bean
Growth Habit: Climbing
Pod Colour: Burgundy-red / Purple
Best For: Stir-fries, steaming and Asian cooking

🌱 Growing Guide – Red Noodle Yard Long Bean

Sowing: April–June
Germination: 7–14 days
Temperature: 20–30°C
Position: Full sun, warm and sheltered
Plant Height: 2–4 metres
Harvest: July–October

How to Grow:
Sow seeds 2–3cm deep in individual pots or modules indoors, or sow directly outside once the soil has warmed and all risk of frost has passed. Keep the compost warm and evenly moist during germination.

Once established, plant outside in a warm, sunny and sheltered position, spacing plants approximately 30–45cm apart. Red Noodle is a vigorous climbing bean, so provide strong canes, netting or a trellis from an early stage.

Water regularly, particularly during flowering and pod development. A mulch around the base of the plants will help retain moisture during hot, dry weather.

The plants produce attractive purple flowers followed by spectacular deep burgundy-red pods, which can reach around 60–80cm long in good growing conditions.

Harvest regularly while the pods are young and tender for the best flavour and texture. Frequent picking encourages the plants to continue producing. The pods are excellent in stir-fries, curries and other Asian-inspired dishes.

💡 Growing Tip: Yard long beans love heat. In cooler parts of the UK, growing against a sunny south-facing wall, in a polytunnel or greenhouse can significantly improve cropping.
