Calabrian Chilli Pepper Seeds – 10 Seeds
🇮🇹 Bring the Fiery Flavours of Southern Italy to Your Garden!
If you’ve ever enjoyed the rich, spicy flavours of authentic southern Italian cooking, there’s a good chance you’ve encountered the famous Calabrian chilli pepper.
Known in Italy as Peperoncino Calabrese, these wonderful little chillies are an essential ingredient in many traditional dishes from Calabria, the beautiful region at the southern tip of Italy.
Our Calabrian chilli plants produce attractive, glossy red fruits with a distinctive short, plump and conical shape.
Their vibrant colour and appealing appearance make them an excellent addition to any chilli collection, but it’s in the kitchen where these peppers really shine!
🌶️ Beautiful, Glossy Red Fruits
One of the most attractive features of our Calabrian chilli is its fruit shape and colour.
The peppers develop from green through orange-red before ripening to a rich, vibrant red.
Unlike the long, slender shape of a typical cayenne, these peppers are relatively short and plump, with rounded shoulders tapering towards a pointed tip.
Their smooth, glossy skins give them a particularly attractive appearance.
The photographs accompanying this listing show peppers harvested from our own plants at Red Dragon Seeds.
🍝 A Favourite in Italian Cooking
Calabrian chillies have earned an excellent reputation for their versatility in the kitchen.
They are particularly associated with the traditional cuisine of Calabria, where chillies are widely used to add flavour and warmth to everyday dishes.
Popular culinary uses include:
- Pasta Sauces: Add finely chopped chillies to tomato-based sauces for an extra kick.
- Pizza Toppings: Use fresh, dried or crushed chillies to give homemade pizzas a wonderfully spicy finish.
- Chilli Flakes: Dry the ripe fruits and crush them into flakes for seasoning.
- Spicy Preserves: Prepare suitable chilli-based condiments using a tested food-safe recipe.
- Meat Dishes: Add heat to sausages, marinades and slow-cooked dishes.
- Mediterranean Cooking: Combine with garlic, tomatoes, basil and oregano.
Whether used fresh or dried, Calabrian-style chillies are a fantastic addition to the kitchen garden.
🔥 Heat and Flavour
Traditional Calabrian chilli varieties are often described as having a fruity flavour with a satisfying level of heat.
Some Calabrian chilli types are considerably hotter than a jalapeño, while others are comparatively mild.
Because the name encompasses several regional varieties, heat levels can differ significantly.
The exact Scoville rating of our particular seed line has not been established.
🌍 A Little Background
The Calabrian chilli has a long association with the food culture of southern Italy.
Rather than referring exclusively to a single cultivar, Peperoncino Calabrese is commonly used to describe several traditional chilli varieties associated with the Calabria region.
Our seed stock was originally obtained from a fellow chilli grower in Mexico under the name Calabrian Pepper.
We have subsequently grown and harvested these peppers ourselves at Red Dragon Seeds.
Although the exact regional cultivar has not been confirmed, the plants produce the attractive short, red, conical chillies shown in our photographs.
