Costeño Rojo Chilli Seeds – 10 Fresh Seeds
Costeño Rojo is a traditional Mexican chilli from the coastal regions of Oaxaca and Guerrero, valued for its fruity flavour, useful heat and importance in regional Mexican cooking.
The plants produce slender, pointed fruits that begin green before ripening to a rich red to deep red. Pods are generally around 6–8cm long, with relatively thin walls that make them particularly good for drying.
The flavour is rich and fruity with earthy and slightly herbal notes. Once dried, Costeño Rojo develops a deeper, more concentrated character and is traditionally used in moles, salsas, adobos, broths and tamales. It is especially associated with Oaxacan and Guerrero cuisine.
Heat figures vary between strains and sources, but Costeño Rojo is generally regarded as medium to hot. Published figures range from roughly 5,000 up to 30,000 SHU, so I would avoid promising one exact number and describe it as approximately 10,000–30,000 SHU depending on strain and growing conditions.
A great variety for anyone who enjoys authentic Mexican chillies, and especially useful for growers wanting a chilli that works equally well fresh or dried.
