Nonna Agnes’s Blue, also known as San Bernardo Blue, is an exceptionally rare Italian heirloom climbing bean prized for its extraordinary blue-coloured seeds.
The mature dry beans can develop beautiful shades of slate blue through to an intense sapphire blue, making this one of the most unusual and visually striking bean varieties we grow. The depth of the blue colouring can vary depending on growing and ripening conditions, giving each harvest its own character.
Plants are vigorous climbers and require canes, trellis or another strong support. They produce pods containing the distinctive beans, which can be allowed to fully mature and dry on the plant when growing for dried beans or future seed.
Originally preserved as a rare Italian heirloom, the variety has circulated under the name Nonna Agnes’s Blue and is also known as San Bernardo Blue or Azzurro di San Bernardo.
