How to Sow Kale Seeds
- Fill seed trays or small pots with good-quality seed compost.
- Sow the seeds approximately 1cm deep.
- Lightly cover with compost and water gently.
- Keep the compost consistently moist but not waterlogged.
- Place in a bright position at approximately 15–20°C.
- Once the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots or their final growing position.
- Harden off indoor-grown plants gradually before planting outdoors.
Direct Sowing Outdoors
Sow into finely prepared soil from April onwards. Sow seeds approximately 1cm deep and water gently. Once the seedlings emerge, thin them to the recommended spacing.
Watering and Feeding
Water regularly during dry periods, particularly after transplanting and while the plants are establishing.
Feed every 2–3 weeks with a balanced liquid fertiliser to encourage strong, leafy growth.
Protecting Your Plants
- Protect young seedlings from slugs and snails.
- Use insect netting to protect plants from cabbage white butterflies.
- Check the undersides of leaves regularly for caterpillars and aphids.
- Keep the growing area free from weeds.
Harvesting
Harvest the lower outer leaves as required, leaving the central growing point intact. This allows the plant to continue producing fresh leaves over a long period.
Young leaves are tender and suitable for salads, while larger leaves are excellent for soups, stews, stir-fries, roasting and smoothies.
General Kale Tips
- Regular harvesting encourages continuous growth.
- Kale is very cold hardy and can remain productive throughout winter.
- Light frost often improves the sweetness and flavour of the leaves.
- Firm the soil well around transplanted seedlings.
- Remove yellowing or damaged leaves as the plants develop.
Typical harvest period: July to March, depending on sowing time and local growing conditions.
