Chay Pepper Chilli Seeds – Traditional Cuban Seasoning Pepper – 10 Seeds

🇨🇺 A Taste of Cuba – Incredible Flavour Without the Fire! 🌶️

Not every chilli needs to set your mouth on fire!

Chay Pepper is a wonderful traditional Cuban seasoning pepper, prized for its mild flavour, attractive fruits and versatility in the kitchen.

Originating from Cuba, this fascinating variety produces beautiful, chunky peppers that mature from green through shades of orange before developing a rich, glossy red colour.

With an exceptionally mild heat level, Chay Pepper is perfect for gardeners who enjoy the flavour of chillies without overwhelming spiciness.

And if there’s one thing our own growing experience has demonstrated, it’s that Chay Pepper can be an incredibly productive plant!

🌶️ Beautiful, Chunky Red Peppers

Chay Pepper produces attractive, elongated fruits with broad shoulders and gently tapered ends.

The pods can reach approximately 9 cm in length, although individual fruits may vary.

Our plants have produced particularly attractive peppers with slightly irregular, gently wrinkled surfaces and beautiful glossy skins.

As they mature, the fruits progress through several colours:

💚 Green – immature fruits

🧡 Orange – intermediate ripening stage

❤️ Red – fully mature peppers

The combination of different colours makes the plants particularly attractive during the growing season.

🍎 Delicious Flavour with Very Little Heat

What makes Chay Pepper particularly special is its flavour.

Unlike intensely hot chilli varieties, Chay Pepper is primarily grown as a seasoning pepper.

The fruits are described as having a pleasant, slightly apple-like flavour with a satisfying crisp texture.

With a reported heat range of approximately 0–500 Scoville Heat Units, most fruits are very mild, although occasional peppers may develop a little more heat.

This makes Chay Pepper a fantastic choice for anyone who enjoys cooking with fresh peppers but prefers to avoid intense chilli heat.

🍲 Perfect for Cuban-Inspired Cooking

Seasoning peppers play an important role in Caribbean cooking, where their flavour can be just as important as their heat.

Chay Pepper is wonderfully versatile in the kitchen.

Try using your homegrown peppers for:

  • 🇨🇺 Cuban-inspired stews and savoury dishes
  • 🥘 Homemade seasoning blends and sauces
  • 🫙 Pickling and preserving
  • 🔥 Grilling and roasting
  • 🥗 Fresh preparations and salads
  • 🌶️ Drying for homemade pepper seasoning

Their mild nature makes them especially useful in dishes where you want pepper flavour without excessive heat.

🌿 Exceptionally Productive Plants

One of the most impressive characteristics we’ve observed at Red Dragon Seeds is Chay Pepper’s excellent productivity.

Our own plants have produced generous quantities of chunky peppers, with numerous fruits developing and ripening simultaneously.

Plants can reach approximately 90 cm under favourable conditions, although their final height depends on growing conditions, container size and pruning.

Their bushy growth habit and colourful hanging fruits make them an attractive addition to a greenhouse, polytunnel or sheltered garden.

🌱 Growing Chay Pepper in the UK

Chay Pepper can be grown successfully in the UK with suitable warmth and protection. For the best results, start your seeds indoors between January and April. Sow approximately 5 mm deep in quality seed compost and maintain temperatures around 25–30°C for germination. Once seedlings have developed several true leaves, transplant them into individual pots. Grow in a greenhouse, polytunnel or warm, sheltered position with plenty of sunlight. Water regularly and feed with a suitable tomato fertiliser once flowering and fruiting begin. Harvest the peppers green or leave them to mature to their beautiful glossy red colour.
