1. Sowing Seeds

Sow seeds 1–2 cm deep in seed trays, modules or a prepared seedbed from March to May. Keep compost moist but not waterlogged. Germination usually takes 7–14 days at 15–20°C.

2. Growing On

Once seedlings have developed their first true leaves, transplant into individual pots if necessary. Grow in a bright, cool position and gradually harden off before planting outdoors.

3. Planting Out

Plant into firm, fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny position. Space plants approximately 45–60 cm apart, with 60–75 cm between rows. Firm the soil around each plant to encourage sturdy stems and well-formed sprouts.

4. Feeding & Watering

Incorporate well-rotted compost before planting. Apply a balanced fertiliser if needed and water regularly during dry periods. Avoid excessive nitrogen feeding, which can encourage loose sprouts.

5. Pest Protection

Protect young plants from pigeons, cabbage white butterflies and cabbage root fly. Use fine insect mesh where possible. Rotate brassica crops to reduce the risk of clubroot and other soil-borne problems.

6. Harvesting

Harvest sprouts when firm and well-developed, starting from the bottom of the stalk and working upwards. Harvesting generally begins in autumn and continues through winter, depending on variety and growing conditions.

💚 Tips for Success

Long Island: Compact, traditional green variety, ideal for smaller gardens. Rubine Red: Purple-red sprouts develop their best colour in cooler weather. Often slower growing than green varieties, so allow a long growing season. Groninger: Traditional green variety suitable for dependable autumn and winter crops. Top tip: Brussels sprouts perform best in firm soil. Loose soil and excessive nitrogen can encourage tall, unstable plants and poorly formed sprouts. Red Dragon Seeds — Sow • Grow • Harvest • Enjoy
