Grand Rio Verde Tomatillo Seeds – 50 Fresh Seeds

Grand Rio Verde is a productive tomatillo variety producing large green fruits enclosed within characteristic papery husks. Tomatillos are an essential ingredient in Mexican cuisine and have a distinctive fresh, tangy flavour quite different from conventional tomatoes.

The vigorous plants crop best when more than one plant is grown to aid pollination. Harvest when the fruits have filled their husks. Grand Rio Verde is particularly well suited to salsa verde and is also excellent roasted, grilled or incorporated into Mexican sauces and stews.

Species: Physalis philadelphica
Type: Green Tomatillo
Fruit Colour: Green
Best For: Salsa verde, roasting and Mexican cooking

🌱 Growing Guide – Grand Rio Verde Tomatillo

Sowing: February–April
Germination: 7–14 days
Germination Temperature: 18–25°C
Sowing Depth: Approx. 5 mm
Position: Full sun
Planting Out: May–June, after all risk of frost
Spacing: 60–90 cm
Harvest: July–October

Sow seeds indoors into trays, modules or small pots filled with good-quality moist seed compost. Cover lightly with approximately 5 mm of compost and keep warm at 18–25°C until germination.

Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant individually into small pots and grow on somewhere bright and warm. Pot on as necessary as the plants develop.

After all risk of frost has passed, plant into a greenhouse, polytunnel, large container or warm sheltered position outdoors in full sun. Allow around 60–90 cm between plants, as Grand Rio Verde can develop into a vigorous, spreading plant.

For reliable fruit production, grow at least two tomatillo plants together to improve pollination. Several plants grown close to one another will usually give the best fruit set.

Water regularly, keeping moisture levels reasonably consistent. Feed with a suitable general-purpose or tomato fertiliser once the plants are established. Plants can become large and heavily branched, so stakes or other support can be useful.

Harvest when the fruits are full-sized and have filled their papery husks. As they mature, the husks will often become papery and begin to split. The fruits should remain green and firm when picked for their classic tangy tomatillo flavour.

🌿 About Grand Rio Verde

Grand Rio Verde is a productive green tomatillo producing large, uniform fruits enclosed in distinctive papery husks. The firm green flesh has the fresh, slightly tart flavour for which tomatillos are prized.

An excellent choice for salsa verde, Mexican sauces, roasting, grilling and cooking. The fruits can be used raw for a sharper flavour or cooked and roasted to develop a softer, richer taste.

For classic salsa verde, remove the husks and wash the fruits before use, as freshly harvested tomatillos naturally have a slightly sticky coating.
