Purple Perilla, also known as Shiso, is a striking aromatic herb with deep purple-red leaves and a distinctive flavour. It is used in a range of Asian dishes and also makes an attractive edible ornamental in the garden.

The leaves can be used fresh as a garnish, wrapped around rice or fish, added to salads, pickles and noodle dishes, or used to bring colour and fragrance to the plate. Plants are attractive and productive in pots, beds and greenhouse borders.

Perilla prefers warmth and consistent moisture. It is a rewarding crop for gardeners wanting unusual herbs with both culinary and ornamental value.
