Kyoto Red Carrot Seeds – 100 Fresh Seeds

Kyoto Red is a traditional Japanese carrot valued for its beautiful deep red to reddish-orange roots and sweet flavour. Closely associated with Kyoto cuisine, this colourful carrot is particularly attractive when sliced and adds something different to both the vegetable garden and kitchen.

The roots develop their best colour and flavour under suitable growing conditions and can be enjoyed raw or cooked. Kyoto Red is excellent for salads, roasting, soups and traditional Japanese dishes and is a superb choice for growers looking beyond conventional orange carrots.

Species: Daucus carota
Type: Japanese Carrot
Root Colour: Deep red / Reddish-orange
Origin: Japan
Best For: Fresh eating, roasting and cooking

🌱 Growing Guide – Kyoto Red Carrot

Sowing: March–July
Germination: 10–21 days
Sowing Depth: Approx. 1cm
Position: Full sun
Spacing: Thin to 5–8cm apart
Harvest: Approx. 90–120 days from sowing

How to Grow:
Sow seeds thinly directly outdoors into finely prepared, stone-free soil approximately 1cm deep. Carrots dislike root disturbance, so direct sowing is preferable to transplanting.

Keep the seedbed consistently moist during germination. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, carefully thin them to around 5–8cm apart, allowing the roots plenty of room to develop.

Kyoto Red performs best in deep, loose and well-drained soil. Avoid freshly manured ground or excessive nitrogen, which can encourage forked or overly leafy growth.

Water regularly during prolonged dry periods to encourage even root development and reduce the risk of splitting.

The long, tapered roots develop their characteristic deep crimson-red colouring as they mature, creating a particularly striking carrot for both the garden and kitchen.

Harvest once the roots have reached a useful size, generally around 90–120 days after sowing. Later sowings can be left to mature into autumn.

💡 Growing Tip: The red pigmentation develops particularly well as the roots mature, so don't be too
