Hopi Blue Corn Seeds – 15 Seeds

Hopi Blue Corn is a striking traditional flour corn producing impressive ears packed with beautiful deep blue kernels.

Originally associated with Hopi agriculture in the American Southwest, this open-pollinated corn has been grown for generations as a versatile grain crop. The mature kernels are typically allowed to dry on the cob before being ground into blue cornmeal or flour, making it an especially interesting variety for adventurous growers and heritage vegetable collections.

Plants are vigorous and tall, commonly reaching around 1.8–2.7 metres, with substantial ears that can reach approximately 20–25 cm long. It is a relatively long-season corn, generally needing around 100–110 days to fully mature.

Corn is wind pollinated, so for the best cob formation it should be planted in a block rather than a single row. Hopi Blue is particularly well suited to warm, sunny gardens, allotments and traditional Three Sisters plantings alongside climbing beans and squash.

Growing guide

Sowing: April–May under cover, or May–June outdoors once the soil has warmed and the danger of frost has passed. Sowing depth: Approximately 2–3 cm. Germination: Usually around 7–14 days in warm conditions. Planting out: Harden off indoor-raised plants before planting outdoors after the last frost. Spacing: Approximately 25–30 cm between plants, with around 60–75 cm between rows. Position: Full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. A warm and sheltered site is preferable in the UK. Pollination: Plant corn in blocks of several short rows rather than one long row to improve wind pollination and cob development. Harvest: Young ears can be experimented with fresh, but Hopi Blue is principally grown as a flour corn. For grain use, allow the ears to mature and dry thoroughly before removing the kernels.
